An Extraordinary Lauffer Design 2 Set featuring Extremely Rare Oval Dessert Spoons and Dessert Knives
64-piece Lauffer Design 2 flatware set including eight 8-piece place settings, fitted into a custom case. Made in Norway.
The Design 2 pattern was created by Don Wallance for Lauffer in 1953. It came onto the market in 1957. This iconic example of Mid Century Modern Design was far ahead of its time, and continues to enjoy high demand to this day. It is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and in other leading museums around the world.
The way the pieces balance perfectly into the hand is a real joy to anyone who has experienced this design in person. Many of my customers have been using this design daily for decades. Others are delighted to have it passed down to them from previous generations.
One thing that makes this particular design unusual is the soup spoon. The standard soup spoon has a round bowl, measuring 2" x 2." Many people mistake this unusual piece for a gravy ladle. (When in fact the ladle that was created for this pattern is a little bit wider.)
Most people are not aware that there is also an oval-shaped soup spoon as well. Both the oval and round versions double as a soup spoon or as a dessert spoon. In my 25 years of collecting, buying and selling this pattern, I have never seen the oval soup spoon for sale by any dealer anywhere in the world. And I have never listed them for sale in my own store until now. I have been fortunate enough to encounter a few of these pieces by chance over the years, including the ones included in this extraordinary set. Personally, I find the oval variation much more practical and easier to use than the round one. One wonders why it was produced in such small quantities.
Similarly the small dessert knives are extremely hard to find. I have sold a few of these over the years. For some reason they always seem to go to Australia. In addition the small demitasse/espresso spoons are quite rare, desirable, and so much fun!
I recently imported this set from England where it had been safely stored away for decades. Someone was very proud of this set and had a box custom built for it when it was new. The box displays the set nicely. This set was clearly only used for special occasions, and remains in outstanding condition.
The wooden, felt-lined case has a removable lid, making it easy to place into a drawer. It measures about 15-1/8” wide, 15-3/4” tall and 3” deep.
The individual pieces range from 4-5/16” to 7-11/16” long. Made of high quality stainless steel in Norway. A wonderful set of Design 2 flatware by Lauffer.
